Topic

Energy, utilities, and data centers

Utilities are regulated monopolies: state regulators decide what they can charge and which mergers they can make, and those regulators are often appointed by the lawmakers utilities fund. The rapid growth of data centers has raised the stakes, because new power plants and transmission lines are paid for, in part, by ordinary customers.

Swamp Watch tracks utility political spending, the proposed NextEra takeover of Dominion Energy, and the data center money flowing to candidates in both parties.
